The only reason for which a pilot could be excused from flying a dangerous bombing mission was if he was crazy. But only a crazy person would volunteer to fly a bombing mission. So if a pilot acted frightened and said he didn't want to fly anymore, he was considered sane, so he had to fly his next mission. And if a pilot volunteered to fly a mission, he was considered crazy, but the military officers would do nothing to stop him, so he flew anyway.
